Bushra's Success Story

Name of the child : Bushra Idris Ansari

Date of Birth : 20-Mar-14

Date of Admission : 7-Aug-15

Diagnosis : Delayed Developmental Milestones

Bushra was born in the 8th month of pregnancy. Delivery was normal, and her birth weight was 1.5 kg. She had hyperbilirubinemia on the 3rd day of life, and had received phototherapy for the same. She was kept in the incubator for 1 month for weight gain. Later, she was admitted for pneumonia twice, for about one week each. Bushra had delayed developmental milestones both in physical and cognitive formations. She was not able to stand and walk independently. Her cognitive skills were poor. She has mild bilateral hearing loss, for which hearing aids have been provided.

Therapy:

Occupational Therapist

The Occupational Therapist gave Bushra core-muscle strengthening exercises to strengthen her lower extremity, abdominals and trunk extensor muscles. She was made to do sit ups and forward bending exercise. Bushra's postural balance was improved with balance exercise in kneeling and half kneeling position. Proprioceptive and vestibular stimulations were given to improve balance with weight bearing and weight-shift activities.

Special Educator

The Special Educator made Bushra sit and play with other children in the Playgroup. She was trained in the social skills of greeting other people with a smile and nodding. She was trained in all fine motor activities like transfer of objects, ring-stand, tower-making, cylindrical pegs, stacking cups, clay moulding, for improving hand function skills.

Results and Impact:

After coming to AWMH for around 8 months, Bushra is showing good improvement. She started coming to stand with minimal physical assistance and maintains standing position for 5 seconds. She walks with a walker independently under observation of the therapist. She interacts well with other children, therapist and teacher. She sits in the Playgroup session for 45 minutes without her mother and enjoys group sessions. She greets other children with a smile. She can remove and put objects in a basket without support. She waves bye-bye while leaving the room.

Jane's Success Story

Name of the child : Jane Joseph

Date of Birth : 12-Aug-13

Date of Admission : 10-Mar-15

Diagnosis : Delayed Milestones with Autistic features

Jane came to AWMH with complaints of delayed physical, cognitive, speech and social skills. She had generalized hypotonia of body, and poor trunk-control.She was not able to stand and walk. In addition she had poor cognitive and social skills.

Therapy:

Occupational Therapist

Neurodevelopmental therapy with joint-compression, abdominal and trunk extensor muscle strengthening, sit-ups and forward bending were given. Bouncing on the therapy­ ball with rolling in linear and circular motions were given to improve trunk control and balance reactions. Sensory integration and sensory stimulation to modulate tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular sensations, bilateral hand activities to improve hand function and bilateral integration were taken.

A Home program was given to follow.

Special Educator

The Special Educator made Jane sit with support. She took all the fine motor activities like transfer of objects, ring-stand, tower-making, cylindrical pegs, etc, to improve visual focusing and tracking. Group sessions were taken to improve interaction with other children and in play-skills.

Results and Impact:

Jane has shown gradual improvement in gross motor skills. She pulls herself to stand with support of furniture. She moves around by crawling. Her sitting tolerance and attention has improved considerably, and her cognitive skills have improved. She can remove rings from the stand and put them in the tray. She interacts well with her mother and other family member and distinguishes familiar people from strangers. She waves bye-bye while leaving the room. She sits in group sessions and interacts with other children in the room.

Vedica's Success Story

Name of the child :Vedica Ahir

Date of Birth : 05-Jul-13

Date of Admission : 20-Apr-15

Diagnosis : Delayed Milestones with Autistic features

Vedika was referred to AWMH with complaints of delayed physical, social and cognitive milestones. She was not able to stand and walk independently; her mother reported poor social interaction with peers. Her cognitive skills were poor. Poor sensory processing an modulation issues were noticed on evaluation by the Occupational Therapist. Her speech and language milestones were also delayed.

Therapy

Occupational Therapist

The Occupational Therapist gave Vedika relaxation exercises along with repetitions o lo wer extremities. Core muscle strengthening exercises improved her posture and balance reaction. Veclika was made to do sit ups and stepping. Sensory integration and sensor stimulation helped modulate tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular sensations.

The Occupational Therapist gave Yedika's parents, a home program to follow.

She made Vedika do fine motor activities like transfer of objects such as beads, ring-stand, tower-making, cylindrical pegs, money-box, etc. Group sessions were taken to improve interaction with other children and in play skills.

Vedika has shown gradual improvement in gross motor skills. She pulls herself to stand with the support of furniture and tries to maintain standing balance. She takes 5-6 steps with the support of the wall. Her cognitive skills have improved, and she puts rings in a stand. Now she interacts well with her mother and other family members, and indicates her needs such as hunger and dislikes by crying. Her social skills have improved. She likes to play alone but enjoys watching other children play during group sessions

Vrinda's Success Story

Name of the child : Vrinda Kule

Date of Birth : 13-Nov-12

Date of Admission : 17-Jan-14

Diagnosis : Developmental delay

Vrinda's birth cry was delayed by 30 minutes and she had low birth weight She had delay in all developmental domains. Vrinda was referred to AWMH by the Pediatric OPD of J.J. Hospital which she visits , for regular check-up.

Therapy

Occupational Therapist

Vestibular and perceptive stimulations were given to improve Vrinda's muscle tone Core muscle groups were activated through various functional activities in anti-gravity postures. Dynamic sitting balance was improved by mid-line crossing and weight shifting through different postures clubbed with play activities. Lower extremities strength was improved with different resistive activities, along with strengthening exercises.

Special Educator

The Special Educator used multi-sensory input approach to help Vrinda improve in different areas. Group sessions were organized to facilitate social skills of greeting others sharing toys and reciprocity. Activities such as transfer of objects, tower-making wit blocks, cylindrical pegs, catching ball, hitting a target, etc, were done to facilitate eye hand coordination. For improving cognitive skills, activities such as matching objects an similar looking pictures were done. Different activities to improve small muscle strength of hands and pre-writing skills were given.

Results and Impact

After coming to AWMH for around 2 years, Vrinda has shown excellent improvement in her gross and fine motor skills. She can now come to a standing position with the help of furniture, and maintains standing balance for a count of 10. She tries to take 1-2 steps forward without support, to explore her environment. Her fine motor skills have improved she holds crayons with a pincer-grasp (opposed thumb and fingers) for free-hand scribbling on paper. Her cognitive skills have improved. She can match and discriminate similar and different looking objects and picture cards.

As a result of the holistic approach as described above, Vrinda has been making good improvement in all her developmental domains
