About Us
Established in 1974
Our story begins over four decades ago, when a few enterprising mothers of children with intellectual disability, along with their friends joined hands to reach out to less fortunate brethren. This was one of the First Parents Associations in India, initiating the Parents Movement for the Acceptance, Welfare and Rehabilitation of their children. Started initially as a place for counseling parents, devastated with the event of the birth of a child with intellectual disability, and guiding them over to acceptance and empowerment, AWMH has grown into an institution, administering therapy to close to 100 children every month with neuro-developmental delay at its Early Intervention Centers. The Sports and Coaching Center encourages Special schools in Maharashtra to promote sports and physical development. The Recreational Activity Club strives to build up self-confidence amongst the members and has grown into a beacon guiding persons with intellectual disability and their guardians towards joyful living. We, at AWMH Maharashtra, believe that “There is a Place in the Sun and there is a Hope for Everyone with Disability.” AWMH Maharastra has a vast and strong membership of over 450 institutions, Teaching Institutions and NGOs working in the field of Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities and Parents Associations.
Mission
In order to fulfill and realize the Vision, to do everything such as creating awareness, prevention, early detection, early intervention, pre-school stimulation, vocational training & economic rehabilitation, social security, self-advocacy, counseling & guidance and other welfare activities through community based rehabilitation (CBR).
Vision
To endeavor to bring persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities into the main stream of the society and to enable them to live as independently as possible, within their families and within the society with self-confidence, self-respect and dignity.
